Born and growing up in Greenwich, South East London, Danny Wallace kick started his professional footballing career with Second Division side Southampton as an associate schoolboy in February 1977. A small and compact left winger, Wallace made an immediate impact at The Dell and he became the youngest ever Southampton first team player when he proceeded to make his senior debut for The Saints in a respectable 1-1 draw with Manchester United in November 1980 aged only 16 years and 313 days. The lavishly gifted player also made a piece of football history when he appeared for his beloved Southampton at home to Sheffield Wednesday with his two brothers Ray and Rod on the 22nd of October 1988. Always in the middle of action, his performances for the South Coast outfit eventually earned him an England cap against Egypt in January 1986.
Impressed by the prodigious young player, ambitious Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson brought him to Old Trafford in a £1.2 million transfer deal in the autumn of 1989. His Manchester United career started on a high note and he was the club´s first choice left winger during the 1989-90 campaign. Arguably, the pinnacle of his career came when Manchester United won the 1990 FA Cup final against Steve Coppell’s Crystal Palace side. Even though he went on to win the European Cup Winners Cup final against Barcelona the following year, the bandy legged winger never quite managed to live up to his obvious potential. When Lee Sharpe made his breakthrough at Manchester United, Wallace saw his first team opportunities more or less vanish into thin air and the frustrated footballer was subsequently loaned out to lowly Millwall.
As things eventually turned out, Danny Wallace played in his last game for Manchester United in a narrow 1-0 triumph over Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford in January 1993. Later that year, Wallace was transferred to Birmingham City for an estimated transfer fee of £250,000 after making only 47 league appearances for Manchester United. Although his fitness problems had started at Old Trafford, they got even it got worse at the Midlands club, and after a short spell with Wycombe Wanderers the tiny flankman had his football career tragically cut short due to serious illness. The rampant Danny Wallace had his testimonial match in May 2004 when a Southampton selection played an All Star team at St. Mary’s Stadium.
